Surrey Music School is run by Caroline Blount who was one of only two students to obtain a distinction in her post-graduate teaching diploma in teaching piano from Reading University.  She's attended numerous music summer schools, trained in different teaching approaches both in the UK and abroad and was a member of The Curious Piano Teachers for many years.  Caroline is very curious, always pushing the boundaries of what piano teaching is and this ensures her teaching is kept fresh and up to date.  

How do children 'learn' to paint and draw? By reading about it first?  No, by just doing painting! They intuitively know how to paint and draw.  

Good music teaching is the same - for real success, children must first learn music by making it, then learn about it (reading it), later.  Everyone is born with an innate musical ability that must first be developed through listening. moving and making music.  

Caroline is passionate about developing independent musicians who love music and can express themselves through it.  She's the local expert in teaching piano to children from age 4 and her teaching meets the needs of today's children through judicious use of up to date resources informed by the latest research in how children learn best: through listening, movement, creativity, and play.  We don't just sit at the piano and play Middle C! 

Children explore the whole range of the instrument from the first lesson, developing wonderful musical and creative skills along the way.  Their imaginations run wild as they prepare to learn pieces by 'being' the character in the piece, all while listening to it, singing and chanting.  When it's time to play it they have such a good idea of how it goes they quickly pick it up and it means more because they understand what it's about and the 'musical ingredients' . 

Caroline's goal is to give children the best possible musical education and experience, building a firm musical foundation for every child, giving them the opportunity to develop piano playing and music as something they enjoy for life.

Children first develop a strong musical understanding by exploring the piano, playing age appropriate pieces to develop technique, pitch and a sense of pulse and rhythm.  They improvise, compose and engage with music both physically and aurally, setting them  up for musical success as we build a musical foundation for life.  If your goal is for your child to love music and love to play it, then Caroline is the teacher for you.
