Music: composed and played by your child

Enrolling in Guildford now

Piano lessons in Guildford for primary aged children

Is making their own music what your child longs to do?  Isn't that what we all dream of doing?  With Surrey Music school your child will learn, from day one, to make their own music.  Within the first few lessons your child will be exploring the full range of the piano, taking simple musical ideas and experimenting with them to play not only the piece as written, but making changes to make it their own.  They will compose their own pieces within weeks of starting and improvise using simple musical ideas.

You may be wondering how this is possible.  With Surrey Music School your child will learn the building blocks of music through learning simple rote piano pieces, singing, chanting and moving to rhythm and tonal patterns and these are what they will use as a foundation for making their own music.

Children find learning this way highly motivating, they are quick to come up with ideas to compose a piece and write it within minutes, then playing it on the piano, making adjustments and illustrating it.  They enjoy it so much that it is their favourite part of the lesson and they are reluctant to stop doing it!

Watch some children perform pieces they have composed themselves:

As well as composing their own music children also learn simple pieces by rote that they then change to make their own.  Watch children playing solo and in ensemble in the video below:
The method Surrey Music School uses is carefully sequenced to teach children the musical skills they need, at the time they are cognitively ready to learn them. The first few years are spent building not only creativity but also piano technique and developing your child’s audiation, that is the ability to ‘think’ music. This sets them up for lifelong success as musicians.  They (and you) will always treasure the very special experience that Surrey Music School provides.  Read what this happy parent has to say:

Caroline has a very special way of teaching piano and rhythm to the little ones. We are all delighted with the classes. Caroline's way of teaching is unique: in addition to musicality, she awakens in them creativity, self-confidence and curiosity, making use of various teaching tools (toys, games, etc). Learning is a lot of fun. My son has just turned 6 and is increasingly fascinated by music. He loves Caroline's classes. He always comes home very excited, wanting to show what he has learned and willing to learn more and more. Congratulations Caroline and thank you very much!
