The purpose of this course is to introduce your child to the instruments of the orchestra through the story of Peter and the Wolf. By the end your child will be familiar with various orchestral instruments, have moved to them and start to recognise
them when they hear and see them.
Start by watching the ballet from The Royal Ballet, encourage movement, dancing, questions! Ask:
What instruments can you hear?
How do you think the sound is produced? Plucking, blowing, hitting and so on.
Now your child has seen the ballet and started to become familiar with the story it's time to watch an orchestra playing Peter and the Wolf. This excellent video from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra has the conductor narrating as well as conducting! What a clever guy!
Continue to encourage movement, dance, and also looking at the instruments playing the parts. Have more discussions about what instruments you can see and how the sound is produced.
Activity 3The BBC has done some videos about some of the instruments you've been listening too. Watch them here, before you go on to complete the activity sheets.
Listen to this wonderfully uplifting concert showcasing the instrument families of the orchestra: brass, woodwind, strings and so on. Enjoy ☺️
