Buddy lessons

From September 2019 all new students in Chertsey will benefit from a 40 minute 1:1 lesson followed or preceded by a 20 minute 'buddy lesson'.  This is an exciting new opportunity for students to experience learning with and from another child while having fun making music and playing games together.  It also addresses the isolation of playing the piano and can lead to having a duet partner in the future.  Students are matched according to age and level wherever possible.

There are various elements to buddy lessons depending on the children's needs.  These include:

Music theory games

Learning through playing games is:
  • more memorable
  • allows for reinforcement in new contexts
  • fun - students love this way of learning
  • they can learn from each other’s knowledge and mistakes

Ear training games

Students will play games to develop their ear through:
  • singing
  • listening
  • working out well known songs by ear
  • laying more games

There is so much information to take in in reading music, it's a skill that must be practiced and developed!
Ensemble and sight reading skills

Students will:
  • play duets together, developing their ability to play with others. Some will be easy and be used to work on sight reading skills while others maybe more challenging and require learning.
  • improvise together, developing their ability to express their feelings through music

Performance skills

Students will have opportunities to perform to their buddy.  This provides:
  • boost to confidence through trial performances
  • opportunities for constructive criticism
  • opportunities to suggest practice strategies
  • opportunity to practice being a good audience member and develop listening skills
