Piano lessons with Surrey Music School

We offer fun and exciting piano lessons for children who love music and want to make music.  Lessons with Surrey Music School teach children all the skills they need to make and enjoy music making.  If your memories of piano lessons aren't the best rest assured our lessons are nothing like those you may have experienced.

We currently offer private 1:1 piano lessons both during the school day and after school at Boxgrove Primary in Guildford.

Our lessons are unique in that in addition to the usual piano playing skills we also teach musical skills and concepts using games from Vibrant Music Teaching and Music Mind Games.

Children learning with us love their lessons and have fun playing at home and to others.  They get frequent performance opportunities and are proud to share their music with others.  Download our free ebook (no email address required) to learn about the benefits of music for your child.

You don't have to know about music to help your child become a great musician.  If you're new to instrumental lessons check out this blog post which gives you an idea of what being a 'piano parent' involves.

Our lessons put music and creativity at the centre.  Through games, songs, movement and piano playing children will develop a musical foundation including:

  • keeping a steady beat;
  • recognising and working with different rhythms;
  • developing their singing voices through appropriate songs which they will play on the piano by ear and then notate;
  • improvising - one of the key elements of learning an instrument is self expression and there is no better way to express oneself than through making up music.  This leads to much more expressive playing later on as children have to express themselves through music from the start and can then begin to apply that to music that has been written by others.;
  • frequent performance opportunities;
  • learning to read and write music.

As the children progress (within the first term or when the child is ready), a tutor book is introduced.  At the moment we favour Piano Safari as it develops musical, technical and reading skills in an extremely well thought out and thoroughly researched way.  Children learning in this way delight in their music making and are always keen to play.  Please do have a look at some testimonials.

Using this well researched, non traditional approach music making is a magical, joyful experience that children want to repeat.  If you didn't enjoy your lessons as a child you can rest assured we won't repeat that experience for your child.
